NB-this will be the last Melrose ride hosted by Ruth for a few years – So if you haven’t ridden here already, don’t miss out on experiencing this part of SA.....

Friday- 2 pm start - ride on the quiet farm land roads opposite the mountain approximately 2 hours - walk, trot or canter is a possibility.

Saturday- 9 am start - ride is 25 km to 30 km - head out through paddocks and onto a backstreet of the town we will be on the main road for a short distance and then on a gravel road for approximately 1 to 2 km prior to entering private property - this road is usually fairly quiet but we can expect some traffic.  We will climb up 60 mfrom Mount Remarkable Creek viewingthe scenic Gibraltar Rock on our way to Rankin's Hut and then proceed to Granny Grey's Hut before returning to camp.  Lunch to be carried.  We may have a trot where possible but most of the ride will be walking - there will be creek crossings.

Sunday- 9 am start - ride approximately 12 km & 3 hours - out via the foothills to the Monument and Cathedral Rock and back via the town backstreet past the old Jacka’sBrewery.

It's all pretty easy going - a few good hills on the Sat / Sun ride - other than that, flat to gently undulating.

Horses– BYO everything. Drinking water for horses is available (but no washing them with hoses please).  Two large cattle yards are available but it is recommended you bring electric fencing to yard your horse (plenty of space availableover near the cattle yards).  All manure to be picked up.  There’s a supermarket and 2 pubs so if you forget anything all is not lost!

People -BYO everything you need for you and your horse.  Camping, showground use $8 / night / person (this is basically for an unpowered site even though we are allowed to use the shearing shed –if you have an electric fridge the caretaker may charge extra).  No dogs.

The shearing shed on the Melrose Showgrounds is our base(you can sleep in the shearing shed if you wish).  There is electricity for lighting and perhaps a jug, toaster.  Showers & toilets available a short walk from the shearing shed.  A comfort / small cooking fire is allowed. If anyone has any stumps or kindling they have room to bring please do as it’s collect whatever we can find on the ground otherwise.

Directions –Melrose is approximately 3 to 4 hours from Gawler via Clare, Gladstone & Laura (excellent Bakery at Stone Hut 5 km from Laura).  Go through Melrose - the showgrounds are approximately 1 km out of the town on the left opposite the silos - enter the showgrounds go over the bridge and turn right - keep following this track and eventually you'll see the shearing shed - behind the shearing shed are the cattle yards.
