SIDS For Kids Ride 19th & 20th October 2013

Fillies & Colts (Geldings),

19th & 20th October SIDS Ride for Kids.

Saturday's official departure time was for 8.30 a.m. however a few of us were a bit too slow getting started.

All riders were called in for the Horseless Muster to ensure everybody knew and understood the rules and regulations for the ride before setting off.

Our Lead Rider for the weekend was Mick Allman and our Drag Rider was Bec Wyett.

On a perfect spring morning, 18 riders from Foster, Hedley, Yarram, Drouin, Driffield and a few other places, set off from the Toongabbie & District Riders Club Grounds on Saturday's 25km ride.  Riders included children aged from 8 or 9 years old and a few more up and above the half century mark. The ride was undertaken at the walk. We travelled along on some nice flat ground for about half an hour until we were greeted with one very descent size hill.  It was a little deceiving.  When you look around Toongabbie it is flat as a pancake however the hills close by are spectacular. Underfoot became very hard and all steeds were happy to have their shoes on.  We continued to cruise up and down the hills, the views were just unbelievable, you could see for miles and miles. While riding through the bush we heard many kookaburras singing their songs and other very interesting bird noises.  Thankfully no snakes we spotted.  You really do forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life when you are in this type of environment.

The Auction was held after tea on Saturday evening. What can I say! The Auction started off very slow, however with a little bit of liquid persuasion, it really cranked up by the end of the night. I have never laughed so hard and for so long. If you don't ride a horse you should consider coming along next year, just to be part of the Auction atmosphere, especially if the two (they will know who they were) try to outbid one another again.  In the end, I don't think it mattered what was up for Auction these two colts were obviously very competitive. Who knows what they were going to do with all the hair products.  Seriously it is well worth putting in your calendar for next year.  Great night for a Great Cause.

Sunday mornings ride was 10 kms which made it great for the people who travelled some distance to get to Toongabbie.

It was a pleasure to participate in this ride and I have met some wonderful children and adults.  What stood out on this ride is that all riders showed respect and were courteous at all times, and willing to help other riders around them if needed.  Hopefully in the not too distant future we will get to meet up and ride with these fillies and colts again.

I would like to thank all the individuals and businesses who sponsored this event with vouchers or donations for the SIDS Ride Auction. They couldn't have done it without your support.

I would also like to thank all those who catered for the event.  All meals were cooked to perfection.

Great Company, Great Riding, Great Cause.
