Successful Pack Horse Information day held in Narbethong Victoria – 19th November.
Date Posted:
1/12/2011
With over 48 participants this was a fantastic opportunity to share knowledge with some experienced pack saddling veterans. Talks were held on dietary requirements, types of horses, camping gear and then, teamed with presentations from a vet on emergency equine care on the trail and a very informative and interactive talk by a farrier - everyone agreed that the day should not be missed next year. The only complaint was that there was too much information to absorb in one day!!
A special thank you goes to Mr. Alan Woodley from Bullio, who brought down his beautifully presented trio of working mules. Alan was a very willing presenter at the day, and along with with Jo’s mule Rielly, Johns mule Jackson, the horse shed had an amazing display.
This was a first for many, as mules of these sizes are not readily available, the smallest was 15.2 hh and the tallest 16.1 hh. While the mules were a highlight on the day, horses were still the main topic of discussion.
Hands on was allowed (with limits) with people welcome to come and go over the mules (Rielly) and ‘check out’ the varied styles of pack saddling equipment available.
Pack saddles like Decker, Sawbuck, Canadian Panniers, Saddle Adapter Pack Bags, Traditional Australian Pack bags & even a very old 1917 army pack bag, were only some of the styles available to look at, ask questions and talk about.
Stalls of equipment, clothes and food were also on display.
Jo and John Kasch hosted this day on their property in Narbethong. This is the forth one and each year it is bigger than the last.
There is always a donation to a local group/club, this year it was the Marysville Saddle Tramps for their new club rooms. $297.00 was raised.
Thanks go to all our supporters and feel welcome to come next year.

Qld September Camp - Huge Success
Date Posted:
9/10/2011
"Moojirah 2011" Qld September Camp hosted by the Logan River Redlands Horse Trail Riding club was a huge success. With the largest amount of participants for some years registered, 85 participants arrived for the camp and rides were lead out each day by the property owners Frank and Tina Browne.
Particpant feedback has been unanimous in support and comments have been received that this camp has been affectionally known the 'friendly camp'. There was a fantastic mix of people in attendance and once again participants reached deep to raise $4,367.45 for the local Mt Alford Rural Fire Service.
Mt Alford 1st Officer, Trevor Turner advised that this donation will allow the purchase of much needed equipment to help the volunteer fire fighters such as a gurney for cleaning equipment, air compressor, eskies and hand held radios to improve communications
Thanks to the participants for making this camp such a great one and also to Frank, Tina and Samantha Browne for allowing us on their beautiful property once again.

Additional Insurance Benefits
Date Posted:
1/08/2011
I am pleased to advise that ATHRA has secured an increase of benefit (for non income earning members) of $200 per week capped at $1000 with a $100 excess. (Previously benefits were only available to wage earners). This is as a result of concerns conveyed to the ATHRA Board regarding the lack of benefits available to non income earning members, and comes at no additional increase to our premium.
Whilst this is not a huge amount it is an increase of 100% to our previous benefit.
To increase this further will result in increased premiums which ATHRA is unable to accommodate at this point in time without an increase of membership fees, something we hesitate to do at present.
The Directors regard this as a big benefit for those members who fall into this category and thank those members who have been influential in achieving this great result.
Alan Salter
ATHRA Director / Insurance Coordinator.

Brumby Ride - 4th June 2011
Date Posted:
23/05/2011
Unfortunately ATHRA has received advice from the American Competitive Trail Horse Association that riders in America are unable to participate in the joint ride scheduled for the 4th June 2011. They have had to cancel riding in the USA due to an outbreak of Rhino EHV-1 Equine Virus. Our USA counterparts are planning to reschedule the ride in America on the 10th September 2011.
The following is an excerpt from the ACTHA website:
NOTICE: The World Record Ride for the Mustangs has been rescheduled due to the RhinoEHV-1 Equine Virus to September 10th, 2011 (Originally scheduled for June 4th, 2011)
We are sure that all ATHRA members join us in feeling for these people as we all have very clear memories of the EI outbreak in Australia….
Whilst it is very early days with this EHV-1 outbreak the industry in America have high concerns and will no doubt, be taking all precautions.
What does this mean to us?
It appears obvious that due to this late advice the World Record Attempt is not going to be feasible this year, perhaps there will be another opportunity in the near future? ATHRA plans to continue with the Australian effort in support of the Brumbies and suggest that we all continue on with the excellent plans currently in place.
In summary we suggest the following to ATHRA clubs;
1) Continue with your planned ride
2) Still record the number of participants and brumby riders.
3) Ribbons & Prizes will still be awarded.
4) Support our brumbies. The Australian Brumby Alliance needs our assistance!
5) ATHRA will investigate the ability of creating an “Australian Trail Ride Record”
Regards,
Paul Moulden – ATHRA Director & National Ride Coordinator

Biggest Trail Ride in History - 4 June 2011
Date Posted:
15/05/2011
On Saturday 4th June 2011 ATHRA will join with the American Competitive Trail Horse Association (ACTHA) in the conduct of an historic trail ride to raise awareness of the plight of the Australian Brumby and the American Mustang. Every club is encouraged to participate and support this day with their own arranged trail ride and to get as many members and guests riding on that day as possible. Together, both countries’ rides are hoped to break a world record for the Biggest trail ride in history!
All clubs need to place this date on their ride calendar now. It is for such a worthy cause and provides a chance for members to be part of a world record attempt, how exciting!
Australia’s brumby organisations will benefit from funds raised here. American mustang groups will be the beneficiaries across the Pacific. Inform your members. Get organised to make this fun, record-breaking event.
Now, what does each club do to join in? Well, each club is asked to set aside the date, start to plan a local ride, promote it as widely as possible and a suggested amount of $10 per horse.
Simply, clubs need to conduct a ride in the same manner they do now but this time send a copy of the attendance register (as documentary proof for world record purposes) to their Regional Manager along with the fund raising component. As the date draws closer, information updates on ride administration will be sent to the Regional Managers. Media releases will be prepared and national media will be informed.
ATHRA’s partner, Cavallo, is sponsoring the day and will provide special keepsake ribbons to all participants on the day, together with additional giveaways.
ATHRA, its sponsoring partners, such as Cavallo, and the Australian Brumby Alliance, are all working to achieve a number of goals with this super event. We want to give you more fun on horseback but on a grand scale, raise awareness of the plight of the Australian brumby, develop links with ACTHA in the USA and give ATHRA members a record breaking day to remember.
For more information, contact: Paul Moulden, Brumby Fundraiser Ride National Co-ordinator, ph. 0409213841 or jackcutting1@bigpond.com.

Most of you would have either heard of or, been in contact with the ATHRA Secretary Gail Ferris who has been involved with the ATHRA administration at a state or national level for over ten years. Gail has held the positions of NSW Treasurer & Secretary as well as National Secretary. She is returning to her homeland New Zealand on Friday the 4th of March to embark on a new career that of a dotting grandmother. Gail, not being one for fanfare was given a low key celebration lunch at De’hanne Keir’s home on the 6th of February and was presented with a commemorative & unique ATHRA silver & gold belt buckle for her years of loyal and unfailing service. Gail was quick to advise that this will not be the last we hear of her as she intends to start an ATHRA NZ entity as quickly as she can. Knowing Gail this will be sooner rather than later. I’m sure all ATHRA members join me in wishing Gail (& husband Doug) all the very best for this wonderful new phase in her life. A huge THANK YOU Gail for all of your many years service to the ATHRA Membership. Gail’s position is yet to be replaced, this will be done at the AGM on May the 1st. A big warm welcome is extended to Dina Haines, Dina has taken on the role of “Membership Secretary” and is still finding her feet. Please provide Dina with whatever assistance and patience you can.

The restructure is now complete, Regional Managers have been appointed and will no doubt be in contact with Clubs shortly. As with any new administration, there are some teething problems, we seek your patience whilst we refine and improve on the issues. MEDIA RELEASE - Wayne Wendt MP - Moore to Blackbutt section of Brisbane Valley Rail Trail re-opened
Date Posted:
25/02/2011
State Member for Ipswich West Wayne Wendt has thanked volunteers for their hard work to reopen a key section of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail. Mr Wendt said every section of the 161km trail had been damaged by the January floods and this was an important step in the recovery process.
“Some sections of the trail won’t be open for months so it’s important the 30kms between Moore and Blackbutt is now open to the public and bringing people back to the region. “This section runs alongside the D'Aguilar Highway just two hours from Brisbane and is the historical gateway to the South Burnett – it’s one of the most scenic and popular sections of the trail. “Although it runs alongside the upper reaches of the Brisbane River it wasn’t too badly damaged and thanks to the volunteers it’s now open and ready to be enjoyed by the public again.”
More than 25 volunteers from the local community, Brisbane Valley Rail Trail Ambassadors, Bushcare Services, staff from SEQ Catchments and the Department of Local Government and Planning and members of the Australian Trail Horse Riders Association participated in a working bee on Friday 18 February. The most important work they completed was to clear the Boundary Creek crossing and plant more than 200 seedlings and trees to stop further erosion at the creek crossing, while the South Burnett Regional Council has also carried out extensive restoration works to damaged causeways across Blackbutt Creek.
Mr Wendt said reconstructing and repairing the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail would help restore the great economic and tourism benefits it brings to the local region. “The trail has been a catalyst for renewed business confidence, focus and action in the communities along the trail over the past three years,” he said.
“With an estimated 30,000 users every year, it’s bringing much needed tourism dollars into the region.” BVRT community partnership grants (www.dip.qld.gov.au/bvrt) are still available. Grants of between $2000 and $10,000 (GST exclusive) are available for projects supporting and promoting the trail. Deadline for grant Submissions is 11 March 2011.

A very happy New Year to all ATHRA members and their families and friends! The bad news is that our Equitana Special of 30% discount to all ATHRA members has now expired. More bad news – I am temporarily out of stock of Western All-Purpose (#1001), Barrel/Endurance/Stock (#509) and English All-Pupose (#209) Saddlepads. The good news is that as a member of ATHRA, you are entitled to our regular discount of 10% on the purchase of any Cavallo product available in Australia. And don’t forget your one-off $25 gift voucher which can be used against the purchase of any pair of SIMPLE or Sport Boots, or any Cavallo saddlepad (although not in conjunction with any other discount offer).
Q: I often ride on very muddy and slippery trails. How can I improve the traction of my Cavallo hoofboots?
A: You can now purchase studs and an application tool for your SIMPLE and Sport boots. Please contact
Q: Can Cavallo hoofboots be used over metal shoes?
A: Although our hoofboots were designed primarily for barefoot horses, several horse owners have told us that they regularly use Cavallo hoofboots on their shod horses, mainly for extra traction. And of course
even if you do shoe your horses, it’s always handy to have a pair of Cavallo hooboots with you on a long ride in case a shoe is lost.

QUEENSLAND FLOODS
Date Posted:
12/01/2011
ATHRA members will no doubt be aware of the unprecedented and devastating flooding in Queensland and parts of NSW. There are a number of ATHRA-affilated clubs in the affected regions whose members may have been or will be directly impacted by the loss of pasture, equipment and infrastructure such as fencing. I have spoken or emailed club executives in some of these regions to enquire about their safety. The Emergency services are doing a brilliant job under extreme circumstances, however it is likely that some of our members may need assistance in the aftermath of these devastating floods.
If you are in one of these areas and can assist in some way, perhaps with temporary agistment, feed, equipment, etc; or you have been hit by the flooding and need help with your horse; send details of what you can offer or what you need by return email to me. I will create a register and post the details on ATHRA's website and hopefully we will be able to match one to the other.

There is no doubt, exciting times lay ahead for us all, ATHRA looks forward to delivering them to you.
By way of a reminder and under the new structure all new memberships should now be sent to the central address of:
ATHRA Membership Secretary, P.O. Box 19, Karuah, NSW 2324
From October 1st the new 2011 fees apply, these are;
Club Affiliation Fee $50
Adult Member $50
Junior Member $40
Social Member $30 (Non Riding, no voting rights)
Additionally as part of the benefits of the new structure, no Club Secretary is required to pay for his/her ATHRA membership, just make a suitable notation on the form when it is being compiled.
We have reviewed and modified all ATHRA forms, these are now standardised and are available from the website. Just go to www.athra.com.au then click on the “Information & Forms” tab on the left hand side of the home page to provide the listing and to download them. Please ensure you destroy all old forms and use only these new ones from October 1st onwards. It is most important that no modification is undertaken on the new version of the Waiver Form. A helpful “Guide” has been created to explain the use of each form. This “Guide” is also on the page listing the forms within the top paragraph. Please download this and familiarise yourself with its content.
The restructure and change which is about to occur, will, no doubt, streamline the administration process and provide additional efficiencies. It will also provide many more opportunities for ATHRA members.
As with any change, it is likely some minor things may go astray. We have endeavoured to ensure this will not be the case but with such a major shift in administration, it’s likely some minor item may be overlooked. We seek your patience if this eventuates.
Finally, I’d like to thank each of our partners who continue to support us through this time of change, Cavallo, Nash Saddles & Dixon Smith

ATHRA RESTRUCTURE UPDATE
Date Posted:
1/09/2010
The restructure transition is now well under way and on track to commence at the start of the 2011 operating year.
So where are we at and what needs to be done?
Most
states are conducting “Special General Meetings” to either wind up
their state entity or to approve the transfer of their funds to the new
ATHRA organisation.
ATHRA’s new constitution is in its final stages of review and will be
syndicated to all branch executives by the end of August. (You are
encouraged to obtain a copy for your information).
A “Special Council Meeting” is being held in Melbourne on the 22nd of
November to vote on the acceptance of this new constitution. When this
is done, the existing National Executive will take on the role of
“Transitional Board” until the voting of the “New Board of Directors”
which will take place in April 2011.
State Branches have also been busy administering their clubs as well
as transitioning into the new model. They have also undertaken a review
of their “Regional Manager” requirements and will be putting forward
names for appointment at the Special Council Meeting. If any member is
interested in taking on a Regional Manager role or any other position
within the new ATHRA structure you are encouraged to contact your
respective State Executive.
So how will this affect Clubs?
There
is a new way of voting by Clubs. The number of votes entitled to each
club will be based on full club member numbers so a fair and equitable
process is achieved. The voting entitlement is: for every ten full
members, clubs are entitled to one vote, the greater the members the
greater number of votes. Each club is entitled to a minimum of one
vote.
This will result in clubs having a direct influence on who runs the
organization. No longer will clubs vote for their delegates, they will
be electing ATHRA’s Board of Directors directly.
Club affiliation costs are standardised at $50 per club. Club
Secretary’s will continue to send in club affiliation and memberships
forms. This will be administered centrally so improved efficiency will
be achieved. The address to send this detail is: ATHRA Membership Secretary, PO Box 19, Karuah NSW 2324, Gail Ferris will be taking on this vital and pivotal role.
Club Executives please note, in order to align our October 1
membership commencement for “new members”, the above is applicable from
October 1 this year. Clubs overall will see little or no change to
their operations. Further, ATHRA has created a generic “Club
Constitution” for those that wish to update and align themselves with
the National Constitution. This constitution can be adapted to
individual club needs. The organisation will cover the cost for those
clubs which decide to register this new club constitution as their own.
This offer is limited for the duration of 2011.
So how will this affect members?
Members
will see little difference with this change. ATHRA individual
memberships are standardised at $50 for adults and $40 for juniors. A
new non riding membership (Social Member) is also available at $30. (See
new constitution for entitlements)
Summary
There is still a
lot of work yet to be undertaken, we are more confident now that this is
achievable for the start of 2011. Along with the new structure, comes
additional initiatives which we are confident will strengthen the
organization whilst delivering greater benefits to the membership, such
the Australian Trail Horse Registry and Trail Ride Challenges.
Exciting times are ahead for all. The National Executive will again
be manning the ATHRA booth at Equitana, members are encouraged to call
in to the booth and say G’day.
Should you have any questions on this or any other aspect of the
organisation, feel free to contact any of your National Executive whose
details can be found under the “Contact Us” tab.

Brisbane Valley Rail Trail Ride 1-9 May 2010

62 Riders attended the successful inaugrual Brisbane Valley Rail Trail Ride from Fernvale to Blackbutt. Riders commented favorably throughout the event on the local hospitality that was consistently demonstrated by the various local community groups which catered along the trail in each town and out on the trail at appointed lunch spots along the rail trail.
Riders were spoilt with the beautiful riding weather that the SEQ region is reknown for during this time of year and of course enjoyed the fantasic scenery and open country riding. "The atmosphere and the comraderie" demonstrated by the riders was magificent and many new friendships have been formed over the 9 day event. For more photos - go to the Qld photo section.
An Auction raised over $2000.00 for a local community group which will fund an air conditioner to be purchased and installed in the Moore Soldiers Community Hall kitchen. This will certainly be appreciated by the hall volunteers Thanks to all of our generous supporters during the auction.
Successful North Qld Annual Charity Ride - 9 May 2010
Date Posted:

In conjunction with the local Rotary Club, the Mackay and District based ATHRA Club, Breakaway Horse Riders conducted their annual charity ride raising money for cancer reseach. This is the ninth year for the charity ride and the growing support was evident with the largest number of riders participating.
103 riders departed the historic Melba House, located in the quiet sugar town of Marian on the banks of the Pioneer River traveling west. Smoko was greatfully supplied by the Rotary club and a sign of the quality was indicated by a remark from one of the youth riders when questioning a fellow rider about how many of one particular baked delights they managed to have with the response “didn’t you have one? I had four".
Along the trail, the local Aged Care Facility had some residents out in the warm sunshine to cheer and encourage the riders. Due to some of the residents not enjoying the best of sight, a small contingent of riders rode into the grounds to allow the residents closer interaction.
The riders were warmly received at the competition of the ride by attendees at the Dows Creek Bush Carnival. This carnival caters for most, with a wide variety of attractions such as bush poetry, country music, wood chopping and a display of engines that have been painstakingly restored to their former glory.
A special thanks to the members who assisted in the hosting this ride.

Accreditation Feedback
Date Posted:
22/07/2009
The Accreditation weekends are well under way for 2009. Recently another successful weekend was held at Illabo and the feedback was so posiitive, we wanted to share it with all ATHRA members. Click here for a comprehensive feedback letter received from a Monaro Horse Trekkers club member.
Further feedback was received from the Macleay Trail Riders stating: "It was great to get together with people of the Macleay Trail riders and the Hastings Trail Riding Club that share the same love of trail riding and horses. Tales of the Trail, reminiscents and gems of wisdom that interjected the weekend gave an insight into the different experiences that we have had in this past time and dealing with horses.... The opportunity to communicate and reflect on events of the past has been valuable to all our members. Dealing with emergencies and unforeseen hazards is always a risk and I think this weekend has brought home the message. There is nothing better than a day in the bush on the trail to clear the head and sharing this experience with friends is a bonus. You have given our members a guide to make it easier for everyone to understand how to run and participate on an ATHRA Trail Ride."
On behalf of the National Executive and Trainers, we thank you for this positive feedback.

Why Accreditation?
Date Posted:

In a nutshell, money! Yes, ATHRA has saved nearly $80,000 in premiums over the last 3 years due to the accreditation program and your club reports - ensuring ATHRA's membership cost remains the lowest in the industry. Having said that, with accreditation comes a better awareness of SAFETY on club rides. If you haven't attended one of these great weekends ("horse OH&S"), contact your Branch Secretary to find out when one is being held near you or host one.
